Copies of the film P. E. de Strzelecki’s Humanitarian Deeds in Ireland, produced by Kosciuszko Heritage and launched in August, were distributed for free at the annual Famine Rock Commemoration Day.
Held on November 17, at Burgoyne Reserve at The Strand in Williamstown (Melbourne, Victoria), the event commemorated the “more than 1700 brave Irish Famine Orphans who left everything behind to come to Melbourne to make a new life from 1848, working as domestics for the colonists in this new country [Australia]” (as described by Tinteán magazine). “Every year since 1998 this vibrant community meets to pay tribute and celebrate our pioneer ancestors, with music, song and exciting real life stories.”
The Commemoration featured readings, poetry and music (including villean pipes, songs, the Irish fiddle, and the tin whistle).
The film distributed on the day focuses on the role played by Sir P. E. de Strzelecki, a Polish philanthropist and explorer who saved hundreds of thousands of children from starvation. It was produced by Felix Molski, Ernestyna Skurjat-Kozek, John Molski, Andrzej Kozek and Lukasz Swiatek.
The DVD was officially launched at the 2013 International Commemoration of the Irish Hunger held at the Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney on the 24th and 25th of August.
