Peter Skrzynecki was born in 1945 in Germany, in Polish \u2013 Ukrainian family. He came to Australia in 1949 as a child, and during his life became a famous Australian writer. He has published over 20 books of poetry and prose. His work has been translated into several languages, including Chinese, German, Greek, Turkish, Spanish, Vietnamese and Ukrainian. Skrzynecki\u2019s collection of short stories\u00a0The Wild Dogs<\/em>, autobiographical novel\u00a0The Sparrow Garden<\/em>\u00a0and an anthology of poetry\u00a0Old World \u2013 New World<\/em>\u00a0were translated into Polish and published under the titles \u201cBezdomne psy\u201d; \u201cWr\u00f3bli ogr\u00f3d\u201d and \u201cStary \u015bwiat \u2013 Nowy \u015bwiat\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main theme of his writing has been the struggle of post-war immigrants, also Polish, to Australia in the assimilation and discovery of their identity. His meditative and lyrical poems are closely connected with Australian unique environment and the country\u2019s multicultural society. Peter Skrzynecki is recipient of several prestigious literary awards. Prizes he was awarded include the Captain Cook Bi-Centennial Award, the Grace Leven Poetry Prize and the Henry Lawson Short Story Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1989 he received Order of Cultural Merit from the Polish Government and in 2002 the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to Australian multicultural literature, particularly as a poet. In 2018 he was decorated with Z\u0142oty Krzy\u017c Zas\u0142ugi by Andrzej Duda himself, the President of Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently Peter Skrzynecki is retired. He is a former professor of literature in the School of Humanities at the University of Western Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n
