Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki will be remembered and honoured during the 2015 PolskaÉire Festival.
The event, which runs from March 21 – 29 nationwide in Ireland, aims to “champion the diversity that Polish people bring to Ireland”. It has been established to coincide with the UEFA Republic of Ireland vs. Poland qualifier on the 29th of March.
Strzelecki – the internationally noted humanitarian and explorer, who helped save thousands of lives during the Great Irish Famine, and who discovered and named Australia’s highest mainland mountain (Mt. Kosciuszko) – will be honoured at two events.
The first, titled “Strzelecki – His Life and Times” will take place on March 26, at Polish House in Dublin. The second, titled “Paweł Edmund Strzelecki – connecting Poland and Ireland”, will feature an unveiling of a commemorative plaque, and will be held on March 29, at the side of the Clerys building, in Dublin.
The plaque honouring Strzelecki has been designed and made by the sculptor Robert Sobocinski and features text in three languages: Polish, English and Gaelic. Robert Sobocinski is the son of the famous sculptor George Sobocinski from Poznan, who, among other things, created the Strzelecki monument in Jindabyne. Wojciech Owsianowski developed the vision for the plaque’s design.
Both events will be hosted by the Irish Polish Society; the second will also be hosted by the Embassy of Poland and Dublin City Council.
